Winter as a period of preparation
Winter in snail farming is a preparatory period. Snails from the previous seasons are already (or almost) sold, so it’s time to start thinking about the new season – it’s a time for thoughts and summaries. You can think about enlarging the field in order to increase production or preparation and renovation of the existing park – replacement of damaged wooden canopies (pastures), replacement of enclosing meshes, etc. If you think about enlarging the field, it is worth starting work earlier – it is a good time for calm preparation everywhere … – that is what the snail farmer does in the winter and then may overdo the excess of duties – greater reproduction is associated with a greater amount of work and longer working hours, so it is better to prepare earlier, especially if you do not have too many people to help.
However, what to do if you are just thinking about establishing a snail farm?
January is still a good time to start preparations for commodity snail production. Both the adaptation of old farm buildings for reproduction and the preparation of a field for fattening snails requires some time, but with the right approach and motivation nothing is impossible – the desire and some free financial resources.
Where to start ?
In order not to make mistakes and not to waste time – it is best to advise someone who is experienced. As we all know, it’s best to learn from other people’s mistakes. That’s why we recommend training at the breeder who will advise you not only on the breeding technique but also on the technical adaptation of the building and the field for commercial snail farming. Required room dimensions and boxes, dimensions and design of reproduction tables are just some of the factors required to discuss with the future grower.
