How to set up a snail farm

Park hodowlany ślimaków
Ready snails farm

Snail farming often requires quite a substancial investment, but the costs can be reduced if you use the knowledge of experienced breeders. To start, you need to prepare the right building for reproduction and a breeding park for fattening the snail. The size should be adapted to the needs of the grower. You can start breeding edible snails in several ways:

  1. purchase of mother snails (reproductors)
  2. acquisition of snail eggs
  3. purchase of “juveniles” ( 10-day baby snails)

Stages of breeding

In every breeding we have a certain cycle that takes place every year. Reproduction in buildings takes place in the third and fourth month, fattening in the open air in parks V-IX, and hibernation in cold stores/fridge VIII-II.

Environmental conditions

Due to the fact that the snail moves on very different substrates, it must produce a lot of mucus. However, to do this it needs high humidity – that’s why the breeding needs to be constantly irrigated. In addition, the temperature and composition of the soil play an important role. Snail likes warmth, the optimal temperature for him is 16-22 ° C. Soil should have a higher lime content – then the substrate “holds” heat for long time, which promotes the growth of snails..

Breeding parks

The parks are used for fattening snails – the period needed to achieve the correct weight, shape and hardness of the shell therefore suitable for trade. You can also put a plastic tunnel in the field, to which we begin to transfer babies in mid-April, however we recommend it only when it is necessary due to harsh climatic conditions. Normally, we advise against this idea due to additional costs, labor costs and possible losses when moving snails from the tunnel to the parkHow

How to prepare a fence?

In the park, we prepare a fence, which protects against the escape of snails. For many years we have been using a special small fence, which works perfectly. Such a structure consists of agrofabric, stakes, salt bar and a board forming a roof. The agrofabric is buried in the ground at about 30 cm and stretched on the structure, which prevents snails from getting underground and on the ground. Salt tablets effectively discourage snails from escaping the park. However, in order to protect the field against uninvited guests, i.e. moles, rats, voles or mice, we spread traps and tunnels with a poison behind the fence where snails will not have access to it. In the field, we should plant vegetation to serve as additional food and shelter for snails. We recommend Perko Rzepik (eng. agrimony), also available in our offer.

What kind of hydration system should be installed?

Remember to hydrate twice a day – in the morning and evening depending on the weather. From our experience hanging sprinklers give a better effect than standing ones. Irrigation companies often carry out projects as part of the purchase of equipment. We recommend using this service – then we are sure that there will not be any dry spots on the field where water does not reach, for example when the wind blows harder. Here is our complex irrigation sysem available for purchase. It is good to have a deep well, but you have to choose the right pump power so that it is not too weak in relation to the number of sprinklers. In order to achieve good results in breeding, it is important to serve the breeding park daily and to take care of the proper conditions for snails. Daily activities consist of:

  1. Checking if snails have not escaped outside the farm (preferably in the morning)
  2. Checking the condition of the fence (rodents can perforate the grid)
  3. Checking whether the plants exceed the fence (this facilitates escaping the snails)
  4. Hydrating the park  to maintain adequate humidity
  5. Washing pastures with running water – especially before feed feeding (this prevents wind blowing)
  6. Feeding by spreading the feed on the pallets evenly

A building for reproduction

Reprodukcja ślimaka
Reproduction tables

Depending on the size of the mother herd, we must have a suitable room. It is assumed that the building should have a size of approx. 30-40 m2 with a herd of approx. 5,000 snails. Such a room will serve us for reproduction. We need to provide snails with proper conditions such as temperature, humidity, light and nutrition. The appropriate temperature for Helix aspersa Maxima snails is 21 ° C. It must be remembered that the temperature does not exceed 30 ° C because the snails will then undergo an aestivation (inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate). The humidity required for perfect functioning of snails is 80% (± 5%). Too high humidity can cause the shell to peel off. An important element in the life of a snail is also light. Appropriate lighting allows you to increase the intensity of reproduction. A suitable sensor is needed to regulate temperature, humidity and lighting.

Necessary equipment items

The building for snail reproduction should be equipped with:

  1. heating system – keeping the right temperature
  2. ventilation holes – current air exchange
  3. water source – maintaining the right level of humidity
  4. source of light – providing a 16-hour day for snails
  5. reproduction tables / shelves – reproduction takes place within them
  6. mugs with soil – in them snails bear eggs

Business plan and purchase agreement

Guide+businessplan

As in any business, just an idea is not enough, because a more important role is played by the action plan and the proper implementation of the idea and awareness of how establishing snail farming affects everyday life. Of course, book knowledge is useful, but it is usually not enough.

What do we offer?

Our company Aspersa Snails offers comprehensive training in breeding practice (theory and practice) – 1 day for growing a snail is more than a thousand pages in the book! We advise you step by step and create a building development plan. An individual approach is the foundation in our training. In addition, we offer long-term cooperation based on a snail purchase agreement on favorable terms. In our offer you can find the necessary materials needed by the breeder to start – juveniles or reproductors Helix Aspersa Muller, seeds of agrimony, snail bags.

Why is experience a key?

Most beginner breeders are exposed to basic mistakes that can lead to losses instead of generating profits. Therefore, using our own knowledge and experience, we support startups in this industry and advise on how to set up a snail breeding to make it profitable. We are convinced that the use of our resources will greatly facilitate the creation of your own farm. Snail breeding is our specialty – we have been dealing with this successfully for a long time. Our products are appreciated by customers both on domestic and foreign markets. We know how difficult the edible snail’s breeding may look like at the beginning, which is why we have created a wide offer that can be used by people thinking about starting a farm, as well as experienced growers looking for equipment, advice or a trusted partner. Creating a viable farm requires dedication and commitment, so we encourage you to contact us and get acquainted with our offer.
